Founded in Los Angeles in January 2024, Nonfromseoul aspires to be a bridgehead connecting Korea and the United States — a cultural hub linking contemporary cultures across borders.Nonfromseoul was never simply an exhibition space. It was conceived as a platform for Korean-based artists to find and build their own place within the new stage of America — a space for connection and expansion. The first artist in that journey was Kim Denim. Working from a foundation of street sensibility and subculture, Kim Denim has built a singular artistic world with natural ties to tattoo culture. Within that work, Nonfromseoul found something beyond genre — a feeling rooted in cultural identity. The second invited artist is Lee.K.Lee.K's practice begins with graphite drawing and the sensibility of black and grey tattooing. The artisanal discipline of early tattoo culture — the density of the hand, the craftsmanship of drawing — runs deeply through everything he makes. Many tattoo artists have long referenced and followed his work, and the texture of graphite drawing and the visual language of black and grey tattooing have always shared the same grain.Nonfromseoul sees this as significant. Tattooing, once confined to the margins of subculture, has expanded into the territories of popular culture and fine art, carving out a new artistic position. Lee.K's work exists within this shift. Beginning in graphite, his practice has grown into pure painting, reaching wider worlds through international art fairs and diverse cultural encounters.Lee.K is not simply a painter who belongs to one category. His work moves between drawing and painting, tattoo and craft, subculture and fine art — connecting sensibilities across different cultures, touching the very identity of what Nonfromseoul is built to be.Through this exhibition, Nonfromseoul wants to speak to the possibility of that connection. This is not a space to explain a single genre. In an era where every creative sensibility and culture coexists and expands in parallel, Nonfromseoul and Lee.K are becoming hubs for one another — building new directions for what connection can mean.
